Lab Operations Manager

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in Laboratory Safety Protocols, Mechanical Metrology, and Electrical Metrology.
  • 5 years of experience in Vendor Management and Procurements, and PCB and Flexible Printed Circuit Board (FPCB) rework (soldering, desoldering, crimping, etc.).
  • Experience managing hardware engineering labs, IT data centers, or production test environments.
  • Experience managing technical teams, vendor resources, or project managers.
  • Experience with inventory management systems and operational budgeting.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience with laboratory management and inventory control (Equipment, tools, hardware, etc.).
  • 5 years of experience with leadership and technical mentorship of junior members of a team (Workload balancing, Performance review, etc.).
  • Experience supporting hardware development lifecycles (from NPI to In-Market for Android, Pixel Ecosystem).
  • Excellent data-analytical skills, with experience using metrics (like device utilization and uptime) to drive operational improvements.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across global time zones.
  • Familiarity with Google's internal test infrastructure (e.g., Omnilab, Tradefed, Mobly).

About the job

The Product/Pixel Test Engineering (PTE) Labs team is dedicated to providing exceptional automated test infrastructure and support for Google Hardware (Pixel, Wearables, Nest, and more). We manage the physical space, inventory, and automation systems that enable domain teams to run critical pre-submit and post-submit testing.

In Taiwan, our operations span across New Taipei City (including the Pixel Lab and Power Lab). We are currently driving major initiatives to centralize lab management, standardize hardware setups, and automate device recovery to maximize testbed utilization and uptime.

The Google Pixel team focuses on designing and delivering the world's most helpful mobile experience. The team works on shaping the future of Pixel devices and services through some of the most advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics. This includes bringing together the best of Google’s artificial intelligence, software, and hardware to build global smartphones and create transformative experiences for users across the world.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of Taiwan PTE labs, ensuring stable, safe, and efficient testing environments. Lead local lab expansion and optimization projects.
  • Manage and mentor a team of lab technicians and QA Test Engineers (TEs). Define roles, responsibilities, and workflows to ensure high-quality support.
  • Manage thousands of hosts and Devices Under Test (DUTs) within the labs. Implement standardized tracking processes and drive initiatives to improve device utilization and reclaim idle hardware.
  • Implement standard Bill of Materials (BOM) for lab equipment. Partner with tools developers to deploy automated lab monitoring, environment controls, and device recovery systems to minimize manual intervention.
  • Track and manage local Capital Expenditure and Operational Expenditure (OpEx) budgets. Manage procurement of lab equipment, fixtures, and consumables.
