Product Design Engineer, Pixel Wearables Accessories

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of experience in product design engineering with emphasis on industrial design.
  • 3 years of experience with 3D CAD software (e.g., NX, Creo, Solidworks).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with soft goods materials (e.g., textiles, leathers, elastomers).
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with many manufacturing techniques and DFM (Design for Manufacturing) review and feedback for suppliers.
  • Familiarity with mechanical coexistence issues with electronics, bio-compatability, and reliability.
  • Strong design sense with an eye for detail and working knowledge of structural FEA and thermal.
  • Ability to communicate in English and Mandarin fluently, to support client relationship management in this region.

About the job

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of engineering problems. As a mechanical engineer, you participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. You work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborate with vendors and outside sources in order to see parts through to manufacture.

As a Product Design Engineer for Pixel wearable accessories, you will design, build, and validate new accessories for Google's Pixel product lines, from concept to mass production. There will be close collaboration with cross-functional teams such as Industrial Design, Reliability, Manufacturing, Project Management, Product Management.

The Accessory team’s mission is to offer watch and tracker accessories to fit anyone’s style and needs at affordable prices with a focus on beauty, quality and simplicity that allow for customization, increase value proposition for devices and elevate the brand. We work collaboratively, have fun and celebrate often. This role will focus on internally-designed accessories. You will work closely with the team’s PDEs and cross-functional ID designers, as well as overseas suppliers and vendors. We are a tight, highly functional and experienced team who works on various materials/designs and collaborates with many, allowing you broad scope and decision making responsibility and exposure to multiple functions across the company.

The Google Pixel team focuses on designing and delivering the world's most helpful mobile experience. The team works on shaping the future of Pixel devices and services through some of the most advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics. This includes bringing together the best of Google’s artificial intelligence, software, and hardware to build global smartphones and create transformative experiences for users across the world.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Industrial Design, Product Management, Program Management teams and manufacturing partners to conceptualize, define, design, build, and test new products. Collaborate with device teams on proper assembly specs and system-wide design. Collaborate with suppliers of subsystems and/or individual parts throughout the design and manufacturing process.
  • Own 3D and 2D drawings and define acceptable tolerances. Identify the root cause of design, manufacturing, or reliability issues and develop corrective actions. Ensure clear and thorough documentation of design work.
  • Balance design considerations such as functionality, sustainability, reliability, human factors, manufacturability, and aesthetics.
  • Create and keep clear organization on Bills of Materials.
  • Travel up to 10%, and early morning calls with US counterparts.
